[image]Fires in Central Africa - Jeff Schmaltz, MODIS Rapid Response Team, NASA/GSFC
This true-color image of the varied terrain of central Africa is nearly hidden beneath the bright red markers of thousands of active fire detections captured by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Aqua satellite on June 13, 2003. Across Democratic Republic of Congo (top), Zambia (right edge), and Angola (left edge), fire season is in full swing, as farmers and ranchers use fire as a resource management tool as they have for possibly thousands of years...

[image]Widespread Burning across South Central Africa - Image courtesy Jacques Descloitres, at NASA GSFC
Many fires (red pixels) dot the landscape across Southern Central Africa, including parts of Angola, Zambia, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. There is a faint greyish haze covering much of the region, particularly toward the north (top) of this scene. The fires are mostly the result of slash and burn agriculture, which is a common practice in this region during this time of year. Please note that the high-resolution scene provided here is 500 meters per pixel...

[image]Fires across Southern Africa - Jacques Descloitres, MODIS Rapid Response Team, NASA/GSFC
Scores of fires, marked in red, blaze across Southern Africa in this image pair, acquired by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite on July 11, 2004. The widespread nature of the fires suggests that they were probably started to manage land for agriculture. Though likely harmless in and of themselves, the fires are collectively emitting thick haze, which can be a health hazard...

[image]Fire Season in Central and Southern Africa - NASA image courtesy the , NASA-GSFC
In eastern Africa, numerous fires were burning in Mozambique and Zambia on May 8, 2005. The fires (marked in red) are located in the plains between the Luangwa River in Zambia and the Zambezi River in Mozambique. In this corner of Mozambique, the Zambezi fills a long, thin reservoir behind the Cahora Bassa Dam. This image was captured by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite. The widespread nature of the fires, their location, and the time of year su...

Zambia's Chambeshi River had been transformed from a barely visible line to a broad lake more than 20 kilometers wide when the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer ( modis.gsfc.nasa.gov MODIS ) on NASA's terra.nasa.gov/ Terra satellite captured the top image on February 6, 2007. Many rivers in southern Africa, including the earthobservatory.nasa.gov/NaturalHazards/natural_hazards_v2.php3?img_id=14110 Zambezi , pushed over their banks in early 2007 under the onslaught of an exceptionally...

[image]Fires and Smoke in Central Africa - Image By Jacques Descloitres,
This year’s fire season in central Africa may have been the most severe ever. This true-color image also shows the location of fires (red dots) in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Angola, and Zambia. The image was taken by the Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA ’s Terra spacecraft on August 23, 2000, and was produced using the MODIS Active Fire Detection product.NASA scientists studied these fires during the SAFARI 2000 field campaign.

West of Lake Tanganyika in east-central Africa, smoke chokes the air over Democratic Republic of Congo, where the annual fire season has been ongoing for several weeks. Fires are also burning to the east of Tanganyika in Tanzania, and to the southwest, in Zambia. This image of the haze and fires (orange dots) was captured by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Aqua satellite on May 16, 2004...

In this scene, there were more than 10,000 active fire detections. In many cases these are small, individual fires, but in some cases, there were detections in multiple adjacent pixels, which indicates a larger fire.
